Home Moving Checklist

Use this helpful home moving checklist as a reminder of the things you need to do before you move.

Book the home movers

þ  Decide what services you need.  Some companies will pack and move you

þ  Get references

þ  Go over your expectations with your moving company

þ  Find out if the moving company has any special conditions like payment in full before unloading the truck, changing rates and deposits

þ  Never sign a blank credit card slip

 

If you own your present home

þ Arrange to have your utilities-gas, water, and electric meters read on the day you leave and have the bills forwarded to your new address

þ If the water heater or furnace is rented, arrange for a transfer of the rental agreement to the purchaser

þ Disconnect your telephone, cable TV, and water softener

If you rent your present home

þ  Give necessary written notice (usually 60 days) to your landlord and make arrangements for the return of any monies you have on deposit

þ  Disconnect your telephone, cable TV and any utilities you pay from separate from your rent

 

At your new home

þ Upon arrival check plumbing, appliances, lights and doors.  Ensure all are in good working order.

þ Make arrangements for the gas and electric utilities, water softener, telephone and cable TV to be connected on the day the sale closes. 

þ Change your locks right away.

General Tips

þ Get "Change of Address" cards from the post office

þ Have the post office forward your mail to your new address or Click here  for Smartmoves

þ Cancel any contracted services and pre-authorized cheques

þ Inform gardening, dry cleaning, garbage pick-up, newspapers, magazines, diaper and other home services. Arrange for service at your new address

þ Cancel or transfer memberships

þ Change the address on your driver's license(s) effective the day of the move or Click here

þ Dispose safely of all flammable liquids as it is illegal for home movers to carry them
