unlock every lock you own.

There are three ways our locksmiths can make this happen for you.

1) Double sided key
2) Change locks to one keyway
3) Master Key

First, we can offer you a double sided key. A different key on each side of the key. Unlock the front door of your house, then turn the key over to unlock your office door. Or we can put your condo on one side and your parents house key on the other side.

Each location can have its own key that cannot open the other location, (so people from work cannot open your home.)

Second, Mul-T-Lock makes a huge selection of locks and cylinders that all work with one key. We can change the locks that you use everyday to accept your new special key. Then we can key them alike so that your key will open them all. Deadbolts, padlocks, cam locks, even drawer locks can all use one key.

Third, we can make you a master key that will open many doors. Every building over five stories must take advantage of a master key system. Each door is opened by its own key and the master key. A master key can open hundreds of different doors that each have their own unique key that will not open other doors in the system.

My favourite customer has one key that will open all the doors in 30 buildings across Toronto.

Our one special key cannot be duplicated. We make new original keys by code when you need more keys. Bring photo ID and your key order card into our store, and we will make you as many keys as you like. If you give someone a key and they bring it to us asking us to copy it we will turn them away.

If a key is lost or stolen, it can easily be locked out and replaced using the built-in 3-in-1 feature.

How 3-in-1 Works

Start with the Green key. If it is lost then simply use the Yellow key and all the Green keys stop working.

If the Yellow key is stolen, using the Red key will lock out all Yellow keys and the thief.

What can our locksmith do for you today?

When you are thinking about spending some of your hard earned cash on improving your locks, spend some time talking with our locksmith about the proper way to design your locking system. Often we are rushed for emergency service and you end up with additional keys or locks that should be only temporary.

It is easy to take a lock for granted. A lock is the most reliable machine that we use every day. We think that the builder or previous owner installed the best lock for our needs. This is rarely the case. I encourage you to review all your locks and keys when you need service on just one.

One Key to Rule Them All
Using the most basic locksmith skills, we can give you one key that opens every door in your house or even every lock you use every day! No need for a large ring of keys.

Rekey or Replace
When you lose control of your keys we can cancel the lost key and create a new key for your locks. If your lock is in good working order this is just regular maintenance.

The Master Key
It is the law in Ontario.
Our locksmith can take a series of doors, as you will see in an apartment building or condo, and make a key for each door that will only open that one door. Next we make a master key that will open all the doors. The manager of the building will carry the master key in case of an emergency.

I came upon this list while looking at a Groupon deal. At first I was upset! That is not the way to choose a pin number!

Then I realized it was just a joke!

The Groupon Guide to: Choosing a PIN

Until an ABM can identify its user by odour or how hard he or she hugs it, you will have to log in with a personal identification number. Here are some ways to come up with a memorable four-digit code:

• Year of birth
• Year of first kiss
• Year of last kiss
• Number of friends you wish you had
• Number of horses you tell people you have
• Last four digits of pi
• Expiration date of milk that’s been inside your refrigerator for a few years
• Autoignition temperature of an acoustic guitar
• Four numbers that, when added together, equal a different number
• 1234
• Estimated number of days you’ll spend alone in life, rounded to the nearest thousand

So what is the best way to choose a pin?

A Personal Identity Number is a private four digit code that you can use to identify yourself to a machine or a person. Banks use them. Alarm systems use them. We sometimes forget them.

This is the problem with security. It can be inconvenient. We can’t always remember the code we use to keep our stuff safe. Pick an easy to remember number. Here is a description of what is wrong with the above suggestions along with some good information.

Year of birth

A four digit number is fairly secure. A two digit number less so. All birthdays start with a 19 or a 20. Using a birthday will reduce your PIN to two digits.

Better to take the last two digits from your birth year and the last two digits of your spouses. This will also help you remember his or her age!

Year of… or Date of…

Your first kiss, last kiss and all the kisses in between happened in the last two hundred years. Keep that 19 and 20 out of the front of your PIN code. It’s too easy to guess.

Number of Friends, Horses, Last Four Digits of Pi

This number will change as soon as you see lipstick on your husbands collar or when Bubba takes that last cold beer. Your PIN doesn’t change. Pi is a number that goes on and on without end. When you find the last four digits let me know.

Auto-ignition Temperature of an Acoustic Guitar

This one is actually pretty cool. Not a bad choice for a PIN but once everyone starts using this it becomes less secure. Choose a PIN that you can remember but is obscure enough that nobody will guess. Your phone number is out, a friends phone number is not so bad.

Four Numbers…

Don’t get me started! They all do that! (Except maybe 0000)

1234

This is often the default code. Change it to make it yours.

Estimated Number of Days You’ll Spend Alone in Life, rounded to the Nearest Thousand

This is just sad. :-(

Are there any dating Groupons?

As a locksmith working in Toronto I open doors for people. More importantly, I make sure people can open doors.

A “Door Operator” is a device, usually located at the top of the door or on the door frame, that opens and closes the door automatically or by use of a switch. You may consider it a door opener, since you push a button and the door opens. It is also a door closer, since it opens and closes a door it is called an operator.

I want you to consider three door operators. The first is made by LCN. It is a rugged, door operator made by a well-known brand name company.

The second is made by Norton, another well-known company and is much smaller than the LCN operator.

The third is made in Canada, is rugged and it is green. Meaning environmentally friendly. It is the first door operator that does not require electricity from the grid to open the door.

The application I have in mind is a bathroom door that is required to have an automatic opener for disabled use. The door has already been installed by the contractor and the final coat of paint has dried. Now the owner of the building needs to install an automatic opener/closer. The location is real and it is in Toronto.

The LCN door operator is the first choice because this is a high traffic door. However, no preparations were made to the header (the wall above the door) to mount an operator. Drywall alone is not strong enough to support the weight of this type of operator. To make matters worse, the ceiling is too low to allow installation of the LCN door operator.

The Norton door operator is a good choice for this application. It will fit (always important) and it is a good quality name brand door operator. Now, how to get power to the operator. We will need to call in an electrician to run wires to an outlet to be located beside the Norton door operator. The drywallers will have to return after the electrician is finished making holes in the newly finished drywall then the painter will need to come back to re-paint the new drywall. If only we didn’t need electricity.

Enter the ADA EZ door operator. It installs like a door closer, below the level of the frame. It is self-powered – meaning it doesn’t have to be plugged into an electrical outlet. The best part is that it is on special and can be installed at a lower price than the other two operators.

The Ontario Government Ministry of Community Safety and Corrections has published this list of tips for home security. This list represents your tax dollars at work. Make sure you take advantage of the advice paid for by you.

1. When you move to a new home, you should change or re-key the locks immediately.
2. Always keep your front door locked.
3. Keep screen doors locked whenever your main door is open.
4. Never ignore a knock on the door.
5. Garage doors leading directly into the home should be kept locked at all times, even when you are in the house or backyard.
6. Chain locks are NOT recommended as security for doors. Instead, invest in a peephole which allows you to look out but does not allow the person to see inside.
7. Limit the size of accessible window openings. If they are being used for ventilation at night – install a securable, window stop.
8. Lock ladders to the house, fence or inside a shed or garage. Unlocked ladders can be used to gain entrance through a second story window.
9. Be sure second story windows are closed and locked when you are not at home. Patio furniture has been used as a stepladder to gain access to upper levels of the home.
10. Trim hedges below the window level to eliminate hiding spots for criminals.
11. Make sure that outside lights are in good working order
12. Engrave an identifying mark on your property. This makes it easier for police to identify and harder for criminals to sell.
13. Keep objects with sentimental value in a place no one would suspect when not in use.
14. Take inventory of your property. Use photos or videos and/or DVDs.
15. Lock your vehicles at all times, even when in the garage, so access cannot be gained by intruders. Secure bicycles by obtaining the serial numbers and or identifiers then registering your bicycle with your local police service.
16. Keep your vehicle keys out of sight and in a location where no one would look for them.
17. When new items like TVs, stereos or computer equipment are purchased, be sure to fold the cardboard box inside out before placing in the recycling. This means your new purchases won’t be advertised to anyone on the street.
18. Don’t allow strangers into your home.
19. Know your neighbours.
20. Make sure that your home always looks lived in (e.g., newspapers/flyers picked up, grass cut, snow shovelled etc).
21. When leaving a message on your phone or answering machine, do not indicate that you are not home.

Spadina Security was called out by a Toronto area daycare who was having trouble programming their new Eplex 5700 lock. The lock was installed on a door with a panic bar. By entering the code staff and parents were able to unlock this interior door. There was a need for timed access based on codes. Basically they wanted the staff code to work during the day and not at night. There was also a parent code, a cleaner code and an administration code, each with a specific schedule.

No Problem. This is just the type of job Kaba designed this lock to do.

The locksmith who installed the lock worked for a well-known door company. He wasn’t able to program the lock. A second locksmith was called. Both locksmiths were trained by the Kaba factory and are listed on the Kaba website just like Spadina Security.

The difference turned out to be our experience with Access Control. We install several access control systems a month. We are used to designing and programming electronic locking systems. Most locksmiths have trouble with electronics. Spadina Security is a hybrid company – we specialize in the new electronic locks and access systems as well as the standard mechanical locking systems.

After a few hours of installing software and programming, the lock all worked fine.
